Directory Submission – Good for Rankings?

Directory submission is an easy way of getting links, and is touted as the way to get rankings by some people. You can do it yourself, or you can find people who will do it for you.

Contrary to what some folk say, directory submission will not get you a good ranking with the search engines. However, the search engines expect that a website that has a fair number of links will include some directories.

However, there is one directory where you should get an entry for your site, and you can do this manually in a few minutes. It is www.dmoz.org, and open source directory used by some of the search engines. Also, being listed in dmoz.org is considered a 'good thing' by Google.

To get an entry, first, you check that your domain is not already there. If not, you find the appropriate category and sub-category, and enter it. That's it.

But what sort of directories? There are thousands of minor directories out there, and any that are useful will have Page Rank of at least 3, and preferably 5. You can find these on the internet quite easily as there are lists which show the Page Rank.

How many directories is useful? You need at least 50, and if you are doing it yourself, you can do this easily enough, bit by bit, over a period of a month or so. If you have the time, or can find a good service to do this for you, it is best to get 100-300 listings in these minor directories. More might be considered as 'spam'.

Don't fall for the marketing strategies of some firms who will say they can get you listed in 'thousands' of directories, and that you need to have it done monthly. 100 entries will do, and more will not do that much more.
